Is Computer literacy is an essential skill and should be required?
It has been suggested that computer literacy should be one of the basic requirements of a high school or college education. The definition of computer literacy varies but is generally used to refer to a basic knowledge and understanding of computers and their uses. Many schools believe that computer literacy is an essential skill, but are reluctant to adopt a formal computer literacy requirements since students already have so many requirements to complete before graduation.
Like it or not, computers are a part of our world. You wouldn’t expect a person to graduate without being able to read, write, and do basic math; why would you allow them to graduate without basic computer knowlege as well? I think that it’s perfectly ok to allow someone to take a test to see whether or not they are computer-literate; if they are, there’s no reason for a course, and if they’re NOT, then they certainly need some instruction to function in society today.

Casting Your Net: A Student’s Guide to Research on the Internet $8.06 The first comprehensive guide to conducting academic research on the Internet. The book assumes a certain familiarity with standard research procedures (e.g. library and notetaking skills) and a general computer literacy, but assumes little experience with the Internet. All the major researchable modes of the Internet and their respective search engines are covered, from the early technologies FTP, WAIS, and gopher, which still have usefulness today, to the current favorites, Usenet and the World Wide Web. Also included are sections on the listservs and e-mail. All discussion of finding and evaluating Internet-based information occurs within the context of typical student research, showing how the Internet fits into finding a topic, shaping and narrowing the focus, drafting and revising the paper, and integrating and documenting the source material. Discussions are machine and interface independent, applying to Windows, Macintosh, and text-based computers. For anyone interested in increasing their internet research skills. |

Closing the Digital Divide $41.29 Successful strategies and principles for using information technology to transform regional and community economies exist, and they are presented here with clarity and insight in a way that is useful to both practitioners and researchers. Although the communities discussed here range far and wide, from those in Russia to Australia and to Kenya, any community can benefit from enhanced utilization of information and communication technologies. The ways in which technology can help improve economic, social, cultural, and political conditions are as numerous and various as the communities themselves. In Central Queensland, Australia, community leaders have brought in a high-tech expert advisory system to help them control weed infestation. New Zealand and Australia have pioneered telehealth, the exchange of health care information and the delivery of some services across great distances. In Russia, wiring a community was found to be about more than mere hardware and software; vital to the process was understanding how communities provide access to information technology, how authorities and volunteers can improve computer literacy among citizens, and how connectivity can be extended to greater numbers of people. In some areas of south Asia, nongovernmental organizations have teamed up with local governments to increase access, empowerment, and e-commerce opportunities. These are but a few of the ways this volume contributes to our knowledge base about the impact of technology on economic development. |

Digital Fictions $14.97 When researchers in computer-mediated communications discuss digital textuality, they rarely venture beyond the now commonplace notion that computer textuality embodies contemporary post-structuralist theories. In addition, latterday Luddites do not discriminate among particular forms of computer texts and the different practices of reading and writing each form engenders. Written for students and faculty of contemporary literature and composition theories, this book is the first to move from general to specific considerations. Advancing from general consideration of how computers are changing literacy, Digital Fictions moves on to a specific consideration of how computers are altering one particular set of literature practices: reading and writing fiction. |

Ethical and Social Issues in the Information Age $121.33 The increasing dependence of contemporary society on computers and computer networks, has given rise to an increasing number of computer security problems. This third edition takes off where the second ended to examine ethical, social, and policy challenges steaming from the emergence of cyberspace and the convergence of telecommunication and computing technologies, and the miniaturalization of computing, telecommunication, and information enabling devices. The book broadly surveys thought-provoking questions about the impact of these new technologies, with particular emphasis on the rapid growth of a multitude of computer networks including the internet. It assumes a modest familiarity with the basic computer literacy. Topics and features: Describes how changes in information technology influence morality and the law Surveys the history of computing and the recent evolution of computer crimes Incorporates recent requirements for computer curricula Assesses workplace concerns related to privacy, surveillance, and virtual offices Offers a pertinent discussion on civil liberties, harassment, and discrimination Provides fundamental discussion of computer network security system design and operation to reveal vulnerable areas in the computer network infrastructure (NEW) Introduces and explores techniques in electronic crime investigation(NEW) Explores biometric techniques to system access control (NEW) This newly revised text/reference provides an updated discussion of the ethical and social issues that continue to evolve as computing and information technologies proliferate. Fab: Personal Fabrication, Fab Labs, and the Factory in Your Computer $8.19 What if we could someday put the manufacturing power of a Ford factory in our own garage? According to MIT’s acclaimed technoprognosticator Neil Gershenfeld, the next big thing is personal fabrication–the ability, literally, to make your own products, in your own home, with a miniaturized machine that combines consumer electronics with industrial tools. This sounds like science fiction, but in fact it is exactly where the digital revolution was at the dawn of the age of personal computers. It used to take a mainframe computer the size of the MIT campus to tackle problems that a desktop computer can now easily solve. Personal fabricators (PFs) are tomorrow’s personal computers. PFs will bring the programmability of the digital world to the rest of the world, by being able to make anything (including themselves). Students have already made everything from a defensive dress that protects its wearer’s personal space to a chestpack for storing screams and then releasing them at a more convenient moment. But whimsy is only a beginning: Such experiments are at the vanguard of a new science and a new era–an era of post-digital literacy –that will let people create objects they desire and thus make the kind of world they want to live in. |

High Tech Heretic $12 Stoll examines the cry for and against computers in the classroom, and offers a pointed critique of the hype surrounding computers and their benefits in education. From the Publisher In a book that’s inspired debates and wisecracks across the country, Cliff Stoll, one of the pioneers of the Internet and a renowned gadfly of the computer industry, takes an insightful, provocative, and entertaining look at how computers have encroached on our lives. He punctures the exaggerated benefits of everything from foisting computers on preschoolers to free software to computer help desks that help no one at all. Why is it, Stoll asks, that there is a relentless drumbeat for computer literacy by educators and the high-tech industry when the computer’s most common uses are for word processing and games? Is diverting scarce education resources from teachers and equipment in favor of computers in the classroom the best use of school money? Are supermarket checkout clerks computer literate because they operate a laser-scanner? In these fascinating contrarian commentaries, Stoll focuses his droll wit and penetrating gaze on everything from why computers have to be so darned ugly to the cultural aftershocks of our high tech society to how to turn an outdated 386 computer into something useful, like a fish tank or a cat litter box. As one who loves computers as much as he disdains the inflated promises made on their behalf, Cliff Stoll is a common-sense prophet and a brilliant skeptic. |

Literacy and Augmentative and Alternative Communication $95.29 The new demands of this computer and technology age have focused international attention on literacy levels, on literacy development and literacy disorders. Governments have launched programs to reduce literacy difficulties and support functional literacy for all. In this context, the needs of individuals with severe speech and physical impairments may seem relatively small, and even unimportant. However, for this group of individuals in particular unlocking the literacy code opens up tremendous opportunities, minimizing the disabling effects of their underlying speech and motor impairments, and supporting participation in society. Ironically however, for a group for whom literacy is such an important achievement, current studies suggest that achieving functional literacy skills is particularly challenging. In order to read, individuals with severe speech impairments must access a set of written symbols and decode them to abstract meaning just as anyone else must do. They must convert underlying messages into an alternative external symbol format in order to write. In order to become expert in both of these activities, they must learn at least a certain core of knowledge about how the symbols and messages relate to each other. Just as there are many ways to skin a chicken, there are many possible ways to achieve mastery of reading and writing. Multiliteracies for a Digital Age $32 Multiliteracies for a Digital Age serves as a guide for composition teachers to develop effective, full-scale computer literacy programs that are also professionally responsible by emphasizing different kinds of literacies. Stuart A. Selber also proposes methods for helping students move among these literacies in strategic ways. Defining computer literacy as a domain of writing and communication, Selber addresses the questions that few authors of other computer literacy texts consider: What should a computer literate student be able to do? What is required of literacy teachers to educate such a student? How can functional computer literacy fit within the values of teaching writing and communication as a profession? Reimagining functional literacy in ways that speak to teachers of writing and communication, he builds a framework for computer literacy instruction that blends functional, critical, and rhetorical concerns in the interest of social action and change. Multiliteracies for a Digital Age reviews the extensive literature on computer literacy and critiques it from a humanistic perspective. This approach, which will remain useful as new versions of computer hardware and software inevitably replace old versions, helps to usher students into an understanding of the biases, belief systems, and politics inherent in technological contexts. Selber redefines rhetoric at the nexus of technology and literacy and argues that students should be prepared as authors of twenty-first-century texts that defy the established purview of English departments. The result is a rich portrait of the ideal multiliterate student in a digital age and a social approach to computer literacy envisioned withthe requirements for systemic change in mind. |
